CTai LABS helps robotics teams turn raw camera, depth, LiDAR, and other sensor data into perception outputs the robot can trust and use. This page covers sensor selection, camera bring-up, calibration, synchronization, accelerated data movement, model inference, 2D and 3D perception, tracking, scene understanding, target-platform optimization, and validation on Connect Tech Edge hardware. CTai LABS can start from an early robot idea or join at any later point when the sensors, models, software, compute platform, or observed field behavior need to become one deployment-ready perception system.

Perception begins before the model

Robot perception converts measurements into estimates about objects, free space, people, surfaces, depth, motion, pose, and scene context. The model is one part of that chain. Optics, mounting, exposure, lighting, sensor range, interface bandwidth, timestamps, calibration, transforms, preprocessing, memory movement, inference, postprocessing, tracking, and downstream decision logic all affect the meaning and age of the final output.

Zemcik and Kratochvila (2024) demonstrated an embedded ROS 2 perception system combining a color camera and LiDAR, underscoring the need to evaluate sensing and computation together. Recent research also shows why perception cannot be reduced to one benchmark score. Jiang et al. (2024) reviewed transparent-object perception and highlighted the value of multimodal sensing for cases where conventional RGB and depth pipelines face material-specific limitations. The engineering task is to define what the robot must perceive, in which conditions, and with what consequences when confidence falls.

CTai LABS can make those decisions before a sensor or model is selected. It can also enter after a proof of concept, preserve the working parts, and address a focused issue such as dropped frames, poor calibration, unstable depth, false detections, inconsistent tracking, excessive latency, or insufficient thermal headroom.

What CTai LABS can integrate

Icons Sensor
Sensor and optical architecture

The perception requirement is translated into field of view, range, resolution, frame rate, shutter behavior, spectral response, depth method, environmental sealing, lighting, mounting, and redundancy. CTai LABS can compare monocular, stereo, RGB-D, thermal, polarization, event, LiDAR, radar, and application-specific sensing paths, then map the selected interfaces to Connect Tech hardware.

Icons Camera
Camera and sensor bring-up

A connected camera is not yet a production data source. CTai LABS can configure the Connect Tech BSPs, drivers, device tree, serializers and deserializers, trigger and sync lines, power over coax, network settings, image signal processing, pixel formats, resolution, frame rate, exposure, and diagnostics. Bring-up concludes with sustained capture and a documented configuration that can be reproduced on another system.

Icons DigitalTwin
Calibration, timestamps, and coordinate frames

Intrinsic calibration defines how a camera maps the scene to pixels. Extrinsic calibration establishes the geometric relationship among sensors and the robot. Time calibration establishes when each measurement occurred. CTai LABS can build calibration procedures, manage transform trees, verify trigger and timestamp behavior, monitor drift, and establish re-calibration criteria. These steps prevent geometric and timing errors from appearing later as model failures.

Icons Integration
2D, 3D, and learned perception

Perception pipelines may include image rectification, stereo depth, segmentation, object detection, pose estimation, optical flow, tracking, point-cloud processing, occupancy, free-space estimation, 3D reconstruction, semantic mapping, or multimodal reasoning. CTai LABS can combine classical geometry and learned models based on the output the application needs, then define confidence, persistence, filtering, and failure behavior for downstream consumers.

Icons System Design
Edge ai inference and data movement

NVIDIA Isaac ROS packages and NITROS can reduce avoidable copies across compatible accelerated graphs, while TensorRTâ„¢ can optimize supported neural models for Jetson deployment. CTai LABS profiles the complete sensor-to-output chain, including decode, preprocessing, GPU transfer, inference, postprocessing, tracking, ROS 2 transport, and concurrency with other workloads. Precision changes such as FP16 or INT8 are accepted only after task-level accuracy and failure cases are evaluated.

Icons Architecture
Validation in the real operating envelope

A perception system must be evaluated across lighting, weather, dust, vibration, motion blur, occlusion, clutter, reflective and transparent materials, sensor contamination, temperature, and compute load relevant to the product. CTai LABS can create recorded-data regression sets, scenario matrices, error taxonomies, confidence thresholds, and sustained-load tests. The output is traceable evidence, not a demonstration video alone.

Architecture Through Deployment

CTai LABS can carry the perception work from an idea through production, or take responsibility for one boundary inside an existing program. The starting point determines the first measurement, not the limit of the engagement.

  • Define perception outputs, operating conditions, failure consequences, latency budgets, accuracy measures, and acceptance criteria.
  • Select sensors, optics, lighting, interfaces, Connect Tech hardware, NVIDIA® Jetsonâ„¢ module, storage, network, power, and thermal architecture.
  • Bring up sensors and drivers, establish time and transform conventions, and create repeatable calibration procedures.
  • Integrate classical vision, point-cloud processing, Isaacâ„¢ ROS packages, ai models, TensorRT runtimes, tracking, and ROS 2 interfaces.
  • Profile data movement and resource use under representative concurrent load, then optimize the actual bottleneck.
  • Validate with recorded data, simulation, bench rigs, SIL/HIL, and physical robot scenarios before delivering the release and evidence package.

Connect Tech hardware for robot perception

Connect Tech hardware is the physical and software foundation of each CTai LABS perception path. Platform selection is driven by camera count and interface, LiDAR and network traffic, model concurrency, storage rate, environmental exposure, input power, thermal design, and the mechanical envelope.

Example Robot Perception Projects

Surround perception for a mobile robot

A product team needs synchronized surround cameras, LiDAR, and people detection for a mobile platform. CTai LABS selects the Connect Tech camera and compute path, brings up and synchronizes the sensors, creates calibration procedures, integrates detection and tracking, profiles end-to-end age, and validates occlusion, lighting, crossing traffic, and sustained operation.

3D perception for robotic picking

A manipulation program has an RGB-D model that works on a benchmark but fails on reflective packaging and cluttered bins. CTai LABS isolates sensor, calibration, dataset, preprocessing, inference, and grasp-frame errors, then integrates a revised multimodal pipeline on Connect Tech hardware with task-level validation across the real object set.

Prototype camera stack to production platform

A prototype uses USB cameras and a developer kit, but the product requires locking connections, controlled timing, rugged cabling, and serviceable calibration. CTai LABS migrates the camera path to a Connect Tech GMSL or FPD-Link III platform, ports the software, documents the BSP and settings, and verifies output equivalence and operating headroom.

What CTai LABS can deliver

  • Perception requirements, sensor and optical trade study, coverage plan, latency budget, risk register, and acceptance matrix.
  • Connect Tech platform, camera expansion, NVIDIA Jetson module, network, storage, power, thermal, and mechanical integration recommendation.
  • BSPs and driver configuration, sensor bring-up, synchronization, timestamping, transforms, calibration tools, and service procedures.
  • Integrated 2D or 3D perception pipeline with models, TensorRT runtimes, Isaac ROS packages, tracking, point-cloud processing, and ROS 2 interfaces.
  • Curated validation data, error taxonomy, scenario coverage, performance traces, sustained-load results, and documented operating limits.
  • Versioned software, deployment image, regression suite, calibration records, release notes, recovery steps, and engineering handoff.

The team can begin with an idea, solve a defined perception problem, or carry the complete sensing stack through deployment.

Book a Demo

Bring your goal. Start with the outcome your robot perception program must achieve. CTai LABS, a department of Connect Tech, can begin with an early idea, an architecture decision, a working prototype, a difficult integration issue, or a system that needs to become deployment-ready.

What to bring:

  • What the robot must detect, estimate, track, reconstruct, or understand, and what decisions depend on that output.
  • The operating environment, ranges, lighting, motion, weather, materials, occlusion, contamination, and maintenance conditions.
  • Current or proposed sensors, optics, cabling, Connect Tech hardware, NVIDIA Jetson module, and mechanical constraints.
  • Models, datasets, rosbag recordings, calibration files, error examples, logs, and performance measurements already available.
  • The accuracy, latency, sustained-load, power, thermal, service, and release criteria that define success.

CTai LABS uses these inputs to identify the highest-risk interfaces first and define the shortest credible path to a working, measurable system.
